So, you want to add a dog to the family but don’t know which one to bring home. It can be a daunting task to look through all the photos on the local shelter websites or visit and see them all in their kennels. You never know how a dog will react to its new home or family once she is adopted.
I had wanted another dog for a while. We had Willie, our American Bulldog. We had lost Duma, our Boxer / Heinz 57 mix in 2013. Duma was about 60lbs and Willie was about 80lbs. My dogs kept getting bigger. I like the big dogs, I guess. I was supposed to get a small dog because we lived in an RV. My dogs were getting bigger I looked at websites from all the local shelters, pounds, and veterinarian sites for adoptable dogs in our area. We were about an hour from Houston.
After a few days of looking online I had to run an errand in the Houston area so stopped at a couple of places that I had looked at online. I didn’t see any of the dogs I had looked at online and really, I was just going to look. It was a Friday and I didn’t want to get into rush hour traffic that afternoon so I figured I would go home. The Houston Humane Society was just about a mile out of route and I knew I had seen one of the dogs on their website so I figured I would stop there to see. I had looked at so many I couldn’t even remember which ones I had seen there.
I went inside and checked in the small dog area. In the second to last room, she was laying on her bed and when I looked in she picked up her head and looked at me with her little, blue eyes. I visited with her in one of the visiting rooms and loved her right away. I filled out the paperwork to adopt her right away and they said I could come back and pick her up on Monday after she was spayed and had her shots. She had a name that didn’t seem to fit her…so I named her PENNY.
My friend Terri went with me to pick her up on Monday, February 5, 2018. she was like a parrot, wanting to sit on our shoulders as we drove home. She wanted to see everything that was going on.
When I got her home, we introduced her to Willie. He loved her right away. He was so sweet and careful with her. She took over quickly after the introduction and was ready to play. She jumped all over him and rolled around in front of him and ran around him. No fear in that little firecracker!!
She felt like one of the big dogs and Willie let her be the big dog. He was so happy to have a new dog in the family.
